LoveisDesigner interviews Really Ree about style

How would you describe your sense of style?

Glamorous with edge.

Which piece in your wardrobe is your favorite and why?

My favorite item at the moment is a Ganni dress I bought at my-wardrobe.com. Great for day and night – I can dress if down with a biker jacket and boots, and glam it up with heels, jewels and a clutch!

Pick an item you love from the shop and talk us through how you would style it up.

I’d wear the emerald studs with my hair in a messy bun, minimal makeup just lots of mascara and a deep red lip. I think they’d look perfect with a tee, ripped boyfriend jeans and leopard print heels!

Get to Know Love is Boutique’s Emily!

Everyone here at Love is Boutique is an expert in what they do – and their main priority is making sure you leave the boutique looking and feeling fabulous!

There is no point buying something beautiful unless it makes you feel beautiful too, so we pride ourselves on our dedication to offering free styling advice to our customers.

To give you a little background information about the shop and the ladies within, I’m going to run a few interviews to let you get to know your personal fashion SOS team.

Profile Pic

What is your role within the shop?

I am the shop’s daytime connection to the internet – I tweet, facebook, pin and blog to bring the latest fashionable clothes drops and styling tips to our customers. I dress up the mannequins and style the clothes to help customers find exactly what they are looking for and to make the most of each item so customer’s can see how well a garment will work in their current wardrobe.

What is your earliest fashion memory?

It comes down to two memories, I can’t decide which came first…One is, shamefully, channelling the 90s love affair with all things camo by heading to an army surplus store and decking myself out head to toe in genuine urban combat gear (read: camoflage tee and trousers). The other is sitting with my grandmother and trying on her diamond tiara and white satin gloves. Disparate memories, no?

How would you describe your personal style?

Comfort, above all – I hate to be cold and restricted. My favoured styles are a mix of boho, rock ‘n’ roll and anything sequins. I love my jewels and jumpers!

What is your favorite item currently in the shop?

I would say a Massimo Dutti tan leather jacket, but I just bought it *ahem* So now, my favorite thing is a beautiful cherry red velvet dress that I have palpitations over whenever I see it. I also have a serious soft spot for this D&G handbag – the zip looks like it’s smiling!

D+G Shoulder Bag

D+G Shoulder Bag

Are there any iconic fashion moments in history that you would love to see in fashion today?

I love the 20s and the 60s for their complete wild abandon when it came to fashion – shapes, hemlines, attitudes were all changing and it must have been so exciting! However, I’m realistic enough to know that straight up and down styles do absolutely nothing for my body shape, so my other favorite era is the 50s and Dior’s New Look.

Why is Love is Boutique such a great place to shop, in your opinion?

I have all the taste for well-made, quality clothes, but none of the ready cash to splash on it! This otherwise sad state of affairs has been completely negated by Love is Boutique, which lets me indulge my wildest fashion whimsy and gradually add beautiful garments to my wardrobe. Cost-per-wear, this shop is easily my best find during these cash-strapped times!

If you’d like to have a natter me to discuss what’s currently in the shop Tweet me @LoveisDesigner, or find out more about Boutique owner, Paula by checking out her interview and chatting to through @LoveisBoutique

The Ultimate Shopping Trip Action Plan

Love is Boutique has personal shoppers to help you choose an outfit

It’s finally Saturday, it’s been a long week and you’re looking forward to a bit of fashion action on the high street. Retail therapy is a time honored tradition to soothe away your weekly woes and indulge in a little bit of ‘me’ time away from partners, parents, colleagues and children.

You have waited all week for a trip into town and you’ve hoarded away those extra pennies to splash on something nice and yet…

You know that horrible feeling when your feet hurt, the small of your back is aching, you’re developing a headache from all the strong perfume lingering around the dressing rooms and you cannot, for the life of you, find one thing that you wish to purchase? (Unless of course you were just window shopping with no cash – then you find ten things that fit perfectly and make you look a-mazing).

Check out Love is Boutique in Tunbridge Wells for designer bargains

Well, beat the dreaded shopping burn-out with this list of handy hints for getting to most out of your day – after all, shopping is meant to be a relaxing and enjoyable pastime!

  1. Dress comfy

There is nothing worse, I repeat, nothing worse, than getting super dressed up for a day trumping around the shops. Save the stilettos and fabulous dresses for a night on the tiles and dress for comfort. Otherwise, your feet will feel like daggers in an hour, your make-up will smear over the clothes you’re pulling over your head, your carefully constructed coiffure will droop and you’ll probably freeze without at least two jumpers. This is England, after all.

  1. Plan healthy snack breaks

Beat the mid-afternoon slump with a pre-planned stop at the local smoothie place and fill up on something delicious and nutritious, instead of coming to a grinding halt due to the hunger demons and calling in at the nearest doughnut shop for a box of ten (it is cheaper to buy in multiples) and a milky latte. Clearly, doughnuts are tempting, but if you fancy one, buy one (not ten) and finish it off with a fruit juice. Otherwise you’ll just get a sugar shock, leading to crash and burn twenty minutes down the line.

  1. Go in with a plan

Try not to waft into the shops with a vague idea that you want ‘Something pretty’ for next weeks dinner and drinks. Think tactically. What do you already own? What shapes and cuts look best on you? Are you after an entire outfit or just a nice pair of trousers? Once you have a rough idea of what you’re searching for, you’ll be able to cut the amount of time spent dilly-dallying in the skater skirt section of the shop because you know that skater skirts are not really you, don’t suit you and that you look fantastic when you wear pencil skirts.

  1. Be honest and tactful

If shopping with a bevy of friends or family, under no circumstances allow hot tempers caused by wailing children in the queue to cause you to snap. Stay calm. When asked for your opinion on an item of clothing for a friend, be kind, feel free to flatter, but do not let them walk out of that shop clutching a brand new pair of high-waisted flares when the trousers in question make them look less of the leggy seventies supermodel and more of the mid-west American soccer mum. It’s not big, it’s not clever and they will certainly not appreciate it.

  1. Pair your new item with other things you own before buying

Unless we’re talking absolute, pure, true love with a garment here, it’s best that anything new that you bring home to your wardrobe goes with at least three other things. Without a certain degree of versatility, your new purchase is going to spend more time languishing in the back of your wardrobe than it will skipping about town, footloose and fancy free. So think seriously for a minute before letting the giddy, new-buy feeling take over your head.

What does Love is Boutique do?

We’ve been getting more and more new customers through the doors recently and many of them have either never heard of us or don’t really know what it is that we actually do here at Love is.

So I’m here to explain – I’m just your regular friendly tour guide :)

When you find you have a wardrobe full to bursting with clothes and yet, still nothing to wear, its time for a clear out, no? Then you bring any items in great condition that can be considered designer, vintage or luxe high street over to Love is Boutique.

We fit you out with a shiny membership card and member number. We’ll then check over your items to see if they meet the following criteria:

  • Clean
  • Great condition
  • Designer, vintage or luxe high street label
  • Seasonal relevance

If your item’s meet the criteria, we price them up and put them out in the shop. Our team of stylists dress the mannequins around the shop floor and in the window regularly, giving our stock a chance to shine out beyond the rails.

We also check over new items to for any pieces that might appeal to specific clients who have expressed interest in us sourcing particular things for them.

We limit the amount of items we take per person, per drop off, to eight to maximise the likelihood of you getting a return.

After eight weeks, you are welcome to return to the shop to pick up any items of yours that have not sold. If you just don’t want them anymore, we’ll happily donate them to a charity to save you the time and effort of returning to get them yourself.

If something of yours does sell however, then we pay you 40% of the final price by BACS transfer or you can keep 60% of the final price as store credit to spend on something in the shop to refresh your wardrobe!

If you have any questions about Love is Boutique, fashion or if you’re looking for something special, let us know by calling 01892 549665 or tweeting me @LoveisDesigner or Paula @LoveisBoutique.

We Love Hospice in the Weald

*EDIT – This lovely dress is currently on hold for a client*

This morning we were asked to help raise money for a fantastic cause; the Hospice in the Weald.

We’re going to do this by selling a beautiful Michael Kors dress worn by Davina McCall herself to the 2012 BAFTA Awards.

Davina

The animal print Michael Kors dress worn by TV presenter Davina McCall at the 2012 BAFTA ceremony.

This lovely dress is grown-up, sophisticated and a little bit playful thanks to the on-trend zebra print. The neutral tones means it will flatter both blondes and brunettes, as well as provide a great counterpoint to any fiery redheads out there.

Davina said that she ‘felt drop dead gorgeous in it.’ Davina is happy to support Hospice in the Weald as she believes it to be “A fantastic organisation, through and through.

You could style this dress up for a special occasion like Davina did, with a belt, heels and sharp hair. I’d try some neon yellow pointed courts.

You could add a tailored blazer and closed toe court shoes for a super smart office look. Keep the colours neutral and whisk your hair into a chic low bun for extra style points.

Or you could pair it with brown leather sandals and a chunky glass bead necklace for a weekend outfit. Add a fine knit cashmere cardigan in a funky colour – buttercup yellow or burnt orange perhaps – and it’ll work in casual scenarios too.

However you style it, remember the proceeds from the sale of this dress will be going to Hospice in the Weald, who provide specialist palliative care advice and clinical support for people with life limiting illness, their carers and families. All their services and activities are supported by a skilled and dedicated team of volunteers. No charge is made for these services which are provided on the basis of need rather than ability to pay.

Let us know if you are interested in helping out Hospice in the Weald and Davina McCall by purchasing this dress or donating other items to sell in the charity’s name. Tweet me @LoveisDesigner or Paula @LoveisBoutique or call the shop on 01892 549665.

Dress it Up, Dress it Down

Its that tricky time of year where the sun has finally bought a new hat and come out of hiding to show it off – however, not without a mystifying random mist, haze, smog or chilly morning first.

It’s also the start of event season; with parties, weddings, christenings, holidays and the races all on the horizon. What we buy now has to show its full potential to guarantee it a place in our Summer wardrobes – clothes that can’t work hard and play hard aren’t good value for money.

So, with this in mind I’ve put together some outfits to give you inspiration on how a single item – this time, a dress – can be dressed up for special occasions and also dressed down for a more casual look.

First up is this lovely purple jersey Moschino dress. It has a wrap-style neckline and a draped skirt and bodice that really highlights a petite waist (even if you don’t have one – the power of a good cut!) I’ve styled it UP with this gorgeous cream Thierry Mugler fitted jacket, slung just so over the shoulders à la Paris fashion week and a splendid black feather and crystal brooch.

Moschino Dress Up

Moschino Dress, £129 , Thierry Mugler Jacket, £89 , Feather Brooch, £15

Then I’ve dressed it DOWN with this chunky lilac Malene Birger wrap cardigan, a hand tooled leather golden belt and cute gold pumps with pom pom toes. Perfect for traipsing through an airport early in the morning (hence the Gucci travel bag) but looking fresh as a daisy when you arrive at your destination!

Moschino Dress Down

Moschino dress, £129, By Malene Birger cardigan, £69, Gold belt, £24, Gold pumps, £29, Gucci bag, £399

Next up, I’ve gone for this candy pink By Malene Birger t-shirt dress (backed with silk, yummy!) To dress up what is a very casual style, I added structure with the white blazer and contrast with the deep red belt.

Malene Birger Up

By Malene Birger dress, £89, Topshop blazer, £39, Red belt, £24

Then I dressed it DOWN with the addition of a floral cardigan (with it’s own vintage-look belt). Add wedges and this casual version will take you from the school run, to the pub garden, to dinner at a low key restaurant.

Malene Birger Down

By Malene Birger dress, £89, Betty Barcley cardigan, £29

Coming up now is my favorite! I dressed UP a beaded mini dress from Vintage Stories has a 1920s style look, which works beautifully with a lilac silk stole and black strappy heels for evening parties or wedding reception dancing.

Vintage Stories Up

Vintage Stories Dress, £69, Silk stole, £45, Costume National sandals, £69

To dress it DOWN, I slung a bright cricket knit from Ralph Lauren over the top and a patent purple Lulu Guinness bag (the shape adds to the twenties vibe). Add metallic trainers or desert boots and you’ll be good to go anywhere!

Vintage Stories Down

Vintage Stories dress, £69, Ralph Lauren jumper, £69, Lulu Guinness bag, £140

Now, last but never least, this floor sweeping Jaeger number can be dressed UP with a simple long pendant (I found an ‘Aladdin’s lamp’ style drop necklace in our jewelry cabinet which adds a bout of playfulness) and a beautiful high wedge by Boss.

Jaeger Up

Jaeger dress, £99, Lamp necklace, £15, Boss wedges, £79

To dress it DOWN, I simply added a faded cropped denim jacket by Firetrap and popped the collar for a little old-school attitude – maybe add a quiff and a slick of red lippie to set it off nicely?

Jaeger Down

Jaeger dress, £99, Firetrap jacket, £33

Hopefully that gave you some ideas on how to mix up items in your wardrobe for casual and party looks! If not, never fear, for Love is Boutique is throwing a new season styling party to help you out!

Pop along to the shop on 2nd May from 6pm onwards and we’ll have champagne on hand, as well as our styling team, to give you some tips for the year ahead! Read more about it here.

Feel free to RSVP the event on Facebook to give us an idea of numbers.

If you want to chat fashion & style, tweet me @LoveisDesigner or Paula @LoveisBoutique. You can also give the shop a call on 01892 549665.

Loving the 70s & Jean Muir

We’ve got a bit of a soft spot for the 1970s – the style was bright, breezy and who hasn’t dabbled in flower child fashion at one point or another?

With that in mind, we were thrilled when a particularly beautiful piece of 70s loveliness found it’s way to our shop this morning.

Jean Muir 1970s Vintage Dress

Cobalt blue jersey, covered in glittering stars and moons, with a deep v-neck and fluttery peplum this dress is made for dancing in slow motion through meadows.

Jean Muir Vintage 70s maxi dress

Here’s what Georgina Ripley, Assistant Curator of Dress & Textiles at the National Museums of Scotland, had to say about the piece when our Love is Boutique member wrote to her about it.

I have had a look through the photographic archive and it appears that Jean Muir particularly designed glitter jersey dresses from Autumn 1979 to Autumn 1980, and that pattern in particular (comprised of stars, crescents, circles, diamonds and triangles) appears on a number of garments in the Spring 1980 collection. I did in fact come across a near identical dress within that collection, of cream jersey, also sleeveless, front fastening and featuring a peplum; however, it did not include a belt in the image. If you are certain that you purchased the dress in the early 1970s, it may be that she repeated these motifs in her later collections, as she often reused designs as part of her evolutionary design ethos.

If meadows are few and far between where you are, then I’m pretty sure it would look good with silver gladiator sandals, a long silver pendant and a furry gilet for a glamorous take on the traditional hippy look.

Or maybe, pair it with battered biker boots and a canvas & leather jacket for a bit of glam-rock (don’t forget wild hair and eye make-up).

Jean Muir 70s vintage belt detail

Again, it would look rather spectacular with some gold wedges and a beaded headdress – fabulous wedding guest outfit right there.

Then again, you could put it with black boots, a cashmere jumper and a blazer and you’ve toned it down into day-to-day territory.

Personally, I like it with this soft grey tee with sequinned crescent moon by Sass & Bide.

Jean Muir Dress and Sass & Bide Tee

Jean Muir vintage dress, £119, Sass & Bide tee, £45

I’m not sure there is anywhere this dress wouldn’t work.

Here’s a tip though: Don’t wear it to walk the dog. Muddy paws will not add to this dress’ charms!

Tell me how you would wear this dress @LoveisDesigner or chat to us about your favorite vintage finds @LoveisBoutique and 01892 549665.

Love is presents…Bubbles and Baubles!

On the 2nd May, from 6pm onwards, Love is Boutique will be throwing open our doors and inviting the stylish ladies of Royal Tunbridge Wells to attend a fabulous fashion evening.

We’ll be showing you new ways to top off your outfits with accessories, discussing fashion in all it’s technicolour glory and helping you to break into the new Spring/Summer season with a bang – all with accompanying champagne and cocktails.

It all started with an innocent tweet describing a way to re-fashion your scarf. After all, we all needed a little fashion relief from the Wintry monotony of scarf, gloves, coat and boots. Then tweets started coming back, women excited at the prospect of jazzing up outfits they had begun to grow bored of. We decided to put on a little fashion party. The date, 2nd May, was decided upon.

So at 6pm on the 2nd May, pop along to Love is Boutique. We’ll have drinks on hand, plus our entire stylist team in attendance ready to give you hints and tips on how to work your wardrobe and rock your style. We’ll lay on a little competition to put you in the running for a piece of gorgeous designer arm candy. We’ll even show you new ways to tie your scarf.

Here’s to fashion! Here’s to style!

We’ll see you at 6pm on the 2nd May.

If you have any questions about the event, tweet me @LoveisDesigner or Paula @LoveisBoutique. You can also give the shop a call on 01892 549665. Feel free to RSVP the event on Facebook to give us an idea of numbers.

We Love Spring/Summer Shoes!

YSL Sandals

Yves Saint Laurent Chocolate Suede Sandals,        Size 5, £159

This 2013 has been trying, weather-wise. It’s the second day of April and the second day of sunshine I think I have been privy to experience so far this year…and yet, it is still absolutely freezing!

Never mind the boredom of jumpers and thick socks, what I’m missing most of all right now are bare feet, Summer sandals and an opportunity to rock all the new season block heels. Trouble is, they are mostly open toed, or open-ankled, or open sided. You see the difficulty? Its either embrace fashion full hearted and end up with frostbite or stay cosied up in the same old boots I’ve been wearing day-in, day-out all Winter.

So I have taken the silver lining idea. I have rummaged through the boutique and had a look at all the gorgeous footwear we currently have hiding away, awaiting their moment in the sun – quite literally – our Spring/Summer stock. Now I can start saving and the moment (and I do mean the exact moment) that the heat starts echoing the cheery sunbeams bouncing off of the Love is Boutique mirrors, I will start rocking some sandals.
Here’s a look at our current crop of sandals, hiding behind the last of the Winter boots!

These gorgeous creamy white leather slingbacks are so on trend for 2013, especially with the scallop detail. Wear with cropped navy straight leg trousers and a white silk shirt or pair with loose boyfriend jeans and a sequin jumper.

Chloe Shoes

Chloe White and Beige Leather Slingbacks, Size 5, £149

These Chloe slingbacks are so 50s it instantly makes me think structured sundress, red lippie and a box clutch for Vintage at Goodwood. However, you could also wear them with one of the new season patterned (I like polka dot) dungarees and a shell pink tee, for some grunge glamour.

Chloe Slingbacks

Chloe Sandy Colour Slingbacks, Size 5, £95

Now, I know these aren’t sandals, but I love a shoe boot and cannot resist the siren call of these bad boys. Whip them on with a full skirted midi and a black vest top and you have an amazing look that will take you to a cafe, the pub or a restaurant.

FCUK Shoe Boot

FCUK Black Leather Shoe Boots, Size 4, £35

Classics! These black patent Christian Louboutins are beautiful, everyone knows that red sole and they go with absolutely everything. Mix up your outfit by pairing them with a soft, floaty feminine dress for contrast or else keep to a simple shift dress to insure you’re ready for anything the office throws at you.

Louboutins Sole

Christian Louboutin Black Patent Platforms, Size 4, £260

These chunky Miu Miu’s deserve a high waisted skirt and a tailored shirt by day and a colourful cotton sundress by evening, with a cosy cardigan to keep the chill out in the pub garden.

Miu Miu Chain Sandal

Miu Miu Chunky Chain Strap Sandal, Size 7, £140

Pop these shearling trimmed clogs on to add interest to your outfit when you are in a hurry. They’ll work well with an earthy colour or ethnic printed maxi dress, peeking out from under the hem. Try them with bright cropped jeans or A-line skirts too.

Miu Miu Mule

Miu Miu Chocolate Brown Shearling Mule, Size 5 1/2, £139

Metallics were big on the Burberry catwalks this season and the beaded detail is gorgeous. I’d put these on with a simple jersey skirt and a vest top or slip on with white jeans and a shirt.

Miu Miu Pump

Miu Miu Metallic Fuschia Moccasin with Bead Detail, Size 5 1/2, £89

Wear with a colourful pleated chiffon skirt to below the knee and a plain white tee to really let these shoes do the talking. The nude colour will elongate your legs and the style of shoe will add sashay to your walk!

Rotta Nude Shoes

Gugliemo Rotta Nude Strappy Platforms, Size 7, £140

If you are looking for any styling help or you want to look for a particular item, let us know by tweeting me @LoveisDesigner or @LoveisBoutique, giving us a call on 01892 549665.
