Style hunter!

You would be quite justified at calling me a rubbish blogger at the minute! Apologies to all of you that like reading them but there has been a lot going on at Love Is Boutique and squeezing in writing and blogging has been a little bit tough!

Anyway, it’s just a case of getting the life/work balance in some sort of order and choosing my timing. A nice quiet Saturday morning is perfect before I go off to work.

So… I wanted to show you the lovely Emily Beck who came into our shop last week.  This young lady has a great sense of style and when she tried on a 70′s maxi dress for size, we just had to take a photo to show you.

Emily ended up buying the dress which we were over the moon about as she looked a peach… what do you think?

Emily Beck rocks the vintage 70's look!

You never know what you are going to find at Love Is…. This week we have had a Chanel scarf and handbag, Chanel jewellery, Mulberry Elgin bag, Tods handbag, Prada nylon handbag, Gucci snakeskin Jackie O bag….. a several vintage bits too….

We LOVE our jobs!

Another Love Is Guest Blog!

A few weeks ago we had the pleasure of the rather lovely Katie Brown working with us. Katie, a fashion blogger by night and ALevel student by day is hoping to skip off to do a fashion degree next year. We are very lucky to be having her intern at LiB during school holidays!  Not only is she as bright as a button but has a great sense of style for one still so young!  Look out for more of Katies guest blogs PLUS you can check hers out too!

Battle of the Brands – by Katie Brown

There has only ever been one defining question in my life since the awareness fashion revealed itself to me; To buy designer or not to buy designer? I remember poring over the editorial pages of my mum’s magazines, studying the sources of the garments; “Silk Minidress, £1040, Valentino”, ah. After calculating how many years it would take to save for this dress at a rate of £5 a week (4 years), it was at this point I would pay a visit to the nearest Dorothy Perkins / Topshop / Claire’s Accessories / New Look and splash out on 6 things that I would never wear again. A healthy compromise? I think so.

Now there have been certain circumstances in my life in which I have resorted to both extremes of fashion. First introduction to Primark: £50 spend on 45,000 small pieces of polyester clothing. First introduction to Liberty’s of London: £160 spend on Vivienne Westwood Red Label tartan skirt.

We all know that spending lots of money on small, badly made items isn’t generally healthy. It clogs up your wardrobe, falls apart after 2 wears, makes you feel good (when you buy it) then bad (when you get home and for the rest of the time you own it), and creates a lot of unnecessary waste. There’s also a quite considerable ethical issue with these clothes. I once purchased a pair of black sequin leggings to which my mother claimed she could “hear the small Indian children crying” whenever I wore them. Needless to say, I no longer buy heavily embellished clothes.

My personal issue with expensive designer clothes is that I love them so much, I don’t want to wear them (i.e. ruin them). Perhaps framing them would be a better alternative? But then thing of the cost-per-wear! (oh the dreaded cost-per-wear, which haunts me eternally)

It also worries me sometimes that items from designers can be found just as easily and almost identically on the high-street for a fraction of the price. What happens if I splash out on that *insert designer name here* dress, then see one that looks the same in Topshop  – or god forbid – someone I know wearing it having bought in on the high-street!

Topshop ring vs. Yves Saint Laurent ring

What is the solution to this problem? Buy vintage of course! Why? Well it’s generally much cheaper than buying new designer items, (unless you’re looking for something really famous / rare like an original Chanel quilted cross-body bag) as well as being better value than high street items in terms of quality. It’s also highly unlikely that you’ll see someone else wearing the same as you. Will the benefits never end?! I’ve collected several vintage items from various sources – small vintage shops, charity shops, eBay (it has been good to me) and, of course, Love is Boutique, where I could buy too much and still feel OK about it.

MiuMiu Glitter boots vs. Top Shop version…..

A fashion ramble….

It’s not often I ramble (you know what’s coming now eh…) but as I haven’t done this on the blog for a while (ramble) I thought I would….

The last couple of months have been pretty WOW at LiB. From vintage fairs to charity discos, to 1,000′s of items of stock being dropped off, to 70 new members….it’s been fairly non stop.  Time to reflect, take stock and see where we go from here.  The dress agency side of our business is booming and it’s clear to see that this service is needed in society. Indeed, as the worlds population booms and we buy more and more to sate our appetite for the new, dress agencies along with charity shops will become more and more essential as a means to of dispose your unwanted purchases.

Whilst we build a business on the fact that woman fall in and out of love with clothes, shoes and handbags faster than a Kardashian sister, the best way to use Love Is to it’s full potential is to give AND receive.  Sell your items and, sometimes instead of taking cash, replace several unloved cheaper brands with just one luxe brand that you would normally never buy.  For instance, several dresses from Monsoon and that leather handbag you bought but never use could bag you an Armani jacket.  So whilst you are still adding to your wardrobe (and get that rush from shopping) you are being more fashion savvy!

Makes sense?  Call me a fashion mathematician……

Some pics from round the shop this last week so you know what you are missing…..

This LV bag is a bargain and will last forever in the fashion stakes

This McQueen skull scarf won't be around for long...

This Chanel jacket with jeans is timeless...

New stock is never a problem at LiB

ROCK AROUND MY FROCK!

Oh what a night….. They came in their droves. Some in evening dresses, some in black tie. Some in jeans, some in cocktail dresses.  Some wore black, some had masses of colour. They all came with one thing on their minds. To dance their little socks off!

Yes this weekend was our charity ball in aid of Pickering Cancer Drop In Centre and it was a great success. Not only did we raise over £4000 for an amazing and worthy cause but we had an absolute hoot doing it.

Over 200 people came to shake their booty to some classic dance tunes – the dance floor was full ALL night.  We literally had to kick people out at 1am.  The ladies did not let us down with a gorgeous away of cocktail dresses, evening wear and sparkle.

Most importantly, everyone who came had a fantastic time, vowed to make me arrange another one and we made the wonderful fund raisers at Pickering Drop In Centre very happy. Now that makes it all worth it!

Here is Lynne and I with Polly from Pickering, Emma from Array of Cakes (who made that awesome creation in the centre) and Lou from Pickering.

If you want to come to our next event – make sure you sign up for our newsletter on the front of our website.

Amelia tells all…

Guest Blogger Amelia admits to labels making her go a little gaga…….

I have a little confession to make. I am going to publically out myself. It all started
when I was much, much younger. I can’t remember when exactly, but it must have
been around the time I read my first edition of Vogue. The glossy pages were
savaged, and I became almost hypnotised by the steady stream of names. Of
labels, really. I was sunk. Yes, dear blog aficionados, I became a bit of a
label whore. Now, don’t get me wrong – I don’t mean by that that I stood,
holding back a barrage of bulging wardrobes, a-quiver with everything from
Azzedine Alaia to Giuseppe Zanotti. Gosh no, far from it. At a mere fourteen
years old, there was no possible way I could lay my glitter covered nails on the
kind of cashingtons that would achieve that particular dream.

No, what my label whoredom actually entailed was this: me continuing to pore over
the pages of Vogue as if it were the key to eternal life. I became precociously
au fait with the marvellous workings of Manolo, first hearing the hallowed name
in ‘Sex and the City’ (which, incidentally, I watched furtively, with the volume
off, in my bedroom, and only for the clothes.) This particular obsession began
with tearing out his unique and instantly recognisable hand drawn adverts from
magazines, and culminated in a trip to the Design Museum with my surprisingly
willing Papa, where I waltzed reverently among a collection of Blahnik’s finest.
The fairy-like sandals that were held on to the body with trails of cherry
covered strands are still the material of my dreams.

I became fevered, covering the walls of my room in adverts, photo editorials, and
interviews. I drew constantly, either creating my very own collections or
interpreting the catwalks. We had to prepare talks on our heroes at school, and
I chose Coco Chanel, painstakingly printing and marking up photos and hunting
down facts. I’d love to be able to say that it ended there, that I grew up,
discovered Topshop, and never again spake the names of my idols. Alas, no. The
years passed, and while the colour of my walls changed, the pictures remained
much the same, moving from one moodily shot Vogue editorial to another. I never
plastered up the actors or singers – well, Adam Ant attained a precious spot on
my wall, but that was different.

Knowing fashion was like speaking another language. When you meet a
kindred sartorial spirit, you slip, enchanted, into another world. ‘Did you see
that Stella jacket?’ ‘Yes…a bit boxy, perhaps, but the ombre wash saved it
from complete dreckitude’. That said, I found few of these fellow spirits along
my journey. I’m not a fashion snob – ok, I am – but it’s for the right reasons,
I promise. I just want every woman to feel the best she can, and for most girls,
a wardrobe of cheap jeans won’t achieve that.

Stepping over the threshold of Love is Boutique changed that. I’d
never heard of a dress agency before – at least, I hadn’t really understood what
it meant. I didn’t know I was throwing the doors open on a particularly large
and sumptuous wardrobe. Suddenly, I was fourteen again, and I’d walked into my
dreams. There were the Chloe shantung silk shorts I’d seen in Tatler. There was
the instantly recognisable Vivienne Westwood corset dress, a design classic.
Shelves groaned under the weight of Louis Vuitton bags and Lanvin shoes. It was
quite a humbling moment. These names meant so much to me because of what they’d
represented to me, growing up: a glamorous, exciting, creative world, and one I
longed to be part of.

I believe we’re all so much better acquainted with designer names these days, and
a new generation of label fanatics is being bred, thanks to sartorially savvy
shows such as Gossip Girl and the various incarnations of Next Top Model. It was
from the former that I first learnt about Tory Burch, Philip Lim, Jenny Packham,
Vena Cava and Abigail Lorick. In fact, it was at Love is Boutique that I picked
up my first (and hopefully not last) piece of 3.1 Philip Lim. In a world of fast
fashion that crumbles in your hands, I think it’s important to bolster your
wardrobe with a few fantastic quality pieces, and Love is Boutique has allowed
me to do that without any angry calls from my bank manager. Wearing a little
piece of designer heaven amongst my bread and butter brands makes me feel good,
cheers me up, and ensures I won’t run into someone wearing exactly the same.

If you’ve been there too, and inside you’re just that hopelessly
devoted teenager who never got the chance to wear what you really wanted, pay a
visit to this bubble of gorgeous clothing in the middle of Tunbridge Wells. My
inner fourteen year old is very happy indeed. As is my outer twenty-something.
Don’t be a slave to labels, but treat yourself to something not from the high
street once in a while. Take it from one who knows – you may wear it a million
times, but you never lose the thrill.

Check out Anneka

Now, most of you will know that we LOVE styling at Love Is Boutique. So when the very beautiful Anneka Waldron skipped into the boutique one Saturday afternoon with a look of despair, we sprung into stylist-action!

Anneka was attending a very important wedding and wanted to look picture perfect. Lynne and I got her to try on lots and lots of interesting dresses- some vintage, some high street and a few designer, whilst we looked for that WOW outfit.  Luckily for us, Anneka looked pretty much amazing in everything we dressed her in. A couple of hours later, she still wasn’t 100% which one to go for, and then came ‘the dress’. It was 1950′s navy blue lace that made her curves scream for attention.

Add a beautiful hot pink feather and net fascinator, a vintage embellished clutch in buttermilk and some hot pink shoes and the outfit was a total winner.

And we bet you will agree!!

There is nothing like wearing a vintage dress to make you feel special.  We love helping our customers to find something that no one else is going to have.  This dress now has a new lease of life with someone who will love it forever.

Another Love Is happy ending……

Lady M Presents gives us London Fashion Week!

LadyM Presents, lifestyle and fashion blogger, reports for Love Is Boutique from the heart of the action at London Fashion Week.

London Fashion Week opened at Somerset House on Friday 16th September.  A glorious sunny day, with the fashion pack mingling in the courtyard outside the British Fashion Council ShowSpace and a buzz of excitement about the first shows of the season in between sips of double expressos to keep us going all day!  For me the best season for fashion is Spring/Summer.  Not one to fall in love with Winter knits and opaque tights, I simply love the stylish Spring looks and bright Summer hues.

Paul Costelloe opened the schedule as the lights went down, the wave of excitement could be felt as Editors and Fashionistas wondered what delights Paul would bring us for Spring/Summer. We we’re not disappointed with a sumptuous and stylish start to LFW.  At Paul Costelloe we had  an array of pastel sweets floating down the runway, which were also seen at Orla Kiely’s showcase. Soft hues in ice cream colours that are almost good enough to eat. Perfect for Spring and edging into a colourful season. At New York Fashion Week had a host of hot pinks and neon yellow, Paul sticks to his muted but sumptuous pastel hues.  Stylish, soft structuring to give a feminine tailored look was very present on the catwalk this season.

One key trends for Spring/Summer are white, white will be everywhere, don’t be afraid to wear it, if you don’t want to go all over white, go for a crisp white shirt, try the wrap shirt seen at DAKS, or if you are feeling brave go for a white palazzo pant, also seen at DAKS and Sass & Bide – just stay away from the red wine!

Prints this season have moved on to an edgier take on the African tribal print, seen at Burberry Prorsum, the show that everyone wants to go to at LFW, but for those without an invitation could watch it at London’s Hyde Park, which is a great way to bring fashion to the general public. Burberry Prorsum had an emphasis on craft work and detail through layering and texture of prints in earthy colours with a touch of blue and citrus green.  Whilst at Felder Felder and Maria Grachvogel there was the snakeskin print, the print of the season.  Seen across many of the 120 shows at London Fashion Week was acid yellow and turquoise snake skin print. We’re moving on from leopard and zebra print, ladies, its all about the snakeskin for next Summer.  If you’re not brave enough to go to whole way with the dress, try taking the trend on through peep-toe shoe boots or a snakeskin clutch.

The nautical trend never leaves us, it just grows up a little.  This season we have a little trip back to the 1950′s seaside with DAKS and Sass and Bide.  Moving on from the breton stripes, we go polkadot crazy as well as mixing in wider stripes of an asymmetrical fashion, taking dark navy, flag flying red and of course this seasons white.  The opening of the DAKS show was a homage to the 1950′s with Mad Men style opening credits and a theme tune reminiscent of the BBC drama The Hour.  It felt indulgent and it felt like we were part of a cool gang, heading down to Cannes for the Summer.

Tunbridge Wells Fashions Night Out!

Our guest blogger and fabulous fashionista, Amelia, reviews our Fashion Night Out last Thursday! Read on……

On Thursday 8th September 2011, I was lucky enough to be part of a very glittery, exciting evening at Love is Boutique. Apparently some people were heading to London for, oh, I don’t know – the Vogue-hosted Fashions Night Out, something like that. Well, Fashions Night Out most certainly came to Tunbridge Wells. At around 4.30, the sun had burst through an otherwise rainy day, the champagne was chilling, the goody bags were at the ready (more on those later), my shockingly bad playlist had starting to pump out of the speakers, and the first of many shoppers stepped into the shop.

‘Love is’ was looking on absolutely top form, at her shimmery, glamorous best, enticing in the hoardes of Tunbridge Wells. The window featured one of the most glorious tableaux I’ve ever happened upon. A mass of inky netting and lace formed into a skirt, topped off with the crispest of crisp white shirts, accompanied by oversized Louis Vuitton bag and a sprinkling of blood red shoes. Seemingly settling in the folds of this tremendous  skirt were a host of pink metallic butterflies, and adding to the ethereal effect were a pair of fluffy angel wings.

Inside the shop itself was no different. The lights twinkled, the vintage brooches jostled for attention, snakeskin lay with eelskin, creaking antiquated vanity cases burst forth with a profusion of silk scarves and driving gloves, all watched over silently by the Gods – a gaudy Galliano tunic, a suave Dior dress, a Jean Varon confection in peach. Crowning this already sparkling glory were an army of sleek, musky furs – a distinguished presence on rails and mannequins.

Our hosts for the evening looked just as stunning. Paula colour-blocking merrily away in tomato red maxi skirt and shoe boots the colour of blue hydrangeas, and Lynne walking her usual inspired line between edgy and elegant in black jumpsuit, biker boots and Missoni knit jacket. It was into this warm and welcoming environment that a host of bloggers, press, and general darlings of Tunbridge Wells walked. As the champagne flowed, they walked, mesmerised, as ‘Love is’ began to work its unique magic on them. Almost instantly, jackets were seized, dresses were whipped away into loving hands, and a queue formed for the changing rooms.

By 5.30-6ish, the boutique was absolutely teeming. Photos were taken of every dazzling surface, delighted treasure-hunters were holding up lace shirts, Moschino dresses, tuxedo jackets, and slipping into the embrace of those rather excellent furs. Item after unique item was carefully handed over, wrapped in tissue, and sent on its way. Customers were, quite rightly, charmed by the boutique. In fact, the only thing that slowed them down was pausing to consume an utterly delicious truffle (or two) from Little Treats Bakery (http://www.littletreatsbakery.co.uk/). These little stunners not only looked spectacular, but achieved the truffly ideal – not too sweet, so all the more reason for helping yourself to a few…My personal favourites were the coconut dusted version, although I did try all of them, just to make sure. Purely in the interests of research, naturally.

After the sheer joy of finding a vintage or designer item at a bargainous price, the next thing to put a smile on the face were the massively generous goodie bags, organised by both Becky Cowing (http://champagneandgoodbags.blogspot.com/), and Maria Matzeu, who you can find on Twitter as @nikemaria. I have to admit, I’m a huge one for a well-stuffed goodie bag, and these were just that. We were spoilt for choice with two types. I’m going to go into details, purely because I still keep looking at both of them and smiling.

Green goodie bag

Arranged by Becky, these contained some spectacular products from Nature’s Finest Cosmetics. (www.naturesfinestcosmetics.com) I’ll admit it – years of being a complete and utter beauty junkie have dulled my excitement somewhat when it comes to new products, and it takes a lot for me to get excited these days. Well – impressed I was. I squealed in delight on opening the pristine white box containing the Natures Finest bits and pieces. I can’t remember the last time I saw something quite as pretty as their ‘Purple Hills’ soap, a perfectly crafted chunk of heaven, in pink and purple, smelling of patchouli and lavender. Their slogan is ‘Nautral Needn’t Be Boring’, and quite right, I say. I’ve used that soap every day since getting it, and I think I’ll be buying many, many more. If that wasn’t enough, I’ve also got two tiny glitterballs to pop in my bath. Excellent job to both Becky and Nature’s Finest. I think I’m in love with my soap.

Pink goodie bag

These were courtesy of Maria, the resident Clarins goddess of Tunbridge Wells. I’d always been convinced Clarins was for older skin, but Maria set me straight and showed me the light. I was delighted to receive one of my favourite products, the Clarins ‘Water Purify One-Step Cleanser’ in mint, along with Clarins ‘Wonder Perfect’ mascara. Just when I thought I couldn’t get any luckier, I spied something divine. A perfect recreation of a dress, in biscuit form, devised by Emma Buchanan of Array of Cakes (www.arrayofcakes.co.uk). Not only did it look incredible, but, reader  – I ate it, and it tasted just as fantastic.

Goodie bags aside, the evening really served to highlight the best assets of ‘Love is’ – the personal service. After the happy hoardes had scattered out into the night, swinging bags full of their new wares, just a few remained in the shop. One particular young lady was looking for a dress for an awards ceremony.  She’d found a few nice but unremarkable dresses, and was nearly swayed by a perfectly luscious nude lace 30s style drop waisted number, but she didn’t feel it was quite right. Lynne cast her expert eye over the dresses in store, alighting on a beauty – a lurex maxi dress with squares of bronze, silver and gold. The ¾ length sleeves and collar detail made it an ideal choice for a daytime ceremony, and Lynne paired it with a biker jacket to give it a kick.

Lynne and Paula absolutely come into their own with this kind of informal styling service. There’s no pressure, shoppers are given an honest opinion, and will always be encouraged to take some time to think about it. Lynne suggested our young heroine gave it a few days before deciding, and that she should return with her own accessories to really get an idea of if it was right for her. As it happens, the cavalry was sent for in the form of a helpful friend, and Ms Awards Ceremony settled for the maxi, which she looked unbelievably gorge in. If you’re reading this, please send in a picture!

So, all round, a very successful night, and a great reminder about why this kind of boutique is such a treat to go to. Try getting that level of service in a standard high street store. Go on, I dare you. In the meantime, drop in for your very own styling session with the girls, and be sure to check out the truffles, biscuits and soap if you fancy treating yourself.

Lots of love

Amelia!

Picture perfect….

Just as we unload all our Autumn/Winter stock, the sun decides to come out for one final blast… We are not complaining at all, but as we have said, we are excited for the wardrobe fun that the new season presents…. layering is our fave thing!

Anyway, as new stock arrives every day, we have been busy steaming, labelling, arranging and more!  With the arrival of Autumn we decided it was time for a new pic with a new model in a different outfit for our press and web presence.  So on Thursday morning we skipped up to Tunbridge Wells Common with the gorgeous Amelia, a ball gown, some mad shoes and a leather jacket…. here is the result….
